I went to the polling booth this morning, albeit a little later than usual. I was there by 7:10 AM and believe it or not, there were around 15 people ahead of me. And in a matter of 5 minutes, there were another 15 behind me!
This crowd is slightly unusual for my booth. But the main reason clearly was that people were avoiding the heat and wanted to finish off their duty as early as possible.
And the interesting part was that amongst the 30-35 people waiting in line at that time, there were barely a handful under the age of 40. And for sure, I was the first person under that age to vote in my booth.
The average age of people in line must have been 71 and the presence of the under 40s must have brought it down to 68. There were really very old people standing in line and I was really proud of them.
In fact, when I started from home, I gave a lift to an elderly couple down my street who were on the way to the voting booth. I dropped them back too. I then came back to drop my parents and on the way back, I offered a lift to another senior citizen. He however refused saying "Thanks, but I have to walk. Sorry."
It is indeed a shame to see the younger population of this country still being so insensitive and callous about the whole voting process. And unfortunately, these are the ones who complain incessantly about how bad everything in this country is. I hope they realise at some point that the main thing bad in this country is such people!
And to set the record clear, I did vote for the Lotus!
