Saw this horrible movie last Sunday - the 11th of April.
This is touted to be a one of its kind movie in Tamil, primarily because it is a "road-movie". Agreed, the basic premise is exactly that. But that "difference" alone, doesnt make it a good movie.
There is the usual callous hero who falls in love with the heroine the second he sees her. And then fate brings her right to him and he happily helps her go on a road-trip from Bangalore to Mumbai. Her agenda being an escape from her cruel father who under the influence of his second wife, wants to get his daughter wedded off to some rowdy.
Along the way, an assortment of goons despatched by the angered step-mother try to bring her back. They magically travel by the same road that the hero and heroine travel and are ably assisted by petrol bunks which in a cruel twist of fate, actually maintain invoices and what more, they even store the number of the car in those bills. Now, I know why the bunks in Chennai dont do all that - they dont want the bad guys to trace the beautiful heoine who is trying to escape.
Meanwhile, it turns out that the jobless hero also has had his fair share of run-in with some local mafia goon in Mumbai. So, while he is driving the girl to Mumbai, they magically spot him and start chasing him.
After a couple of fights, some absolutely idiotic escapes at a toll gate and few deviations from the main road into unchartered territory to hide and sing songs, the lead pair reaches Mumbai. At the same time, the two villain groups unite and decide that they would take the guy and the girl respectively.
The heroine manages to find her ultra-rich grandma who initially smothers her like anything. But there is some other uncle dude in the family who resents her presence, coz her mother had ditched the family. So heroine runs away from new heaven and comes to the road, whereupon fate ensures that the hero meets her.
At that precise moment, the dada groups converge and start beating the crap out of the hero. However, their best efforts only result in 5 drops of blood coming out of hero's mouth, though they hit him heavily with GI pipes on the head, face and various other parts we have read about in human anatomy classes.
And in a scene never seen before in Tamizh cinema (sic), the hero thrashes off all the baddies numbering some 20 and weighing a total of 3 tons.
He finally takes the heroine back to Bangalore, when suddenly his friends show up on the route. They start blabbering to the heroine about how much he loves her, though he hasnt told her that already. And she, who until that point in time, hasnt shown any kind of indication that she is falling for him, suddenly falls for him. And the movie ends there!
So what is the difference here? One, the entire story is spanned over a 3 day period or so, which in Tamizh cinema tradition is shown in the first stanza of a song. Two, there is no separate comedy track. Three, well, nothing more really.
About the acting. Karthi, who has been receiving rave reviews for his earlier performances, is certainly not impressive here. From whatever little I have seen of him in Paruthiveeran, I can only say that he is playing the same role here as well, with the only difference being that he is dressed in urban clothes. And the dude dances as bad as his brother did when he started acting.
Tammannah Bhatia is of course gorgeous. She just cant be anything else. And she finally gets her full rain song, though it is not of the sexy type.
And then there is Milind Soman. For someone who was a top model in the country, it is indeed sad to see him having to appear in such movies for 7 minutes and simply get beaten up by the hero. I actually felt that the other fat dada who was chasing Tammu, had a better role in terms of number of words uttered and number of hits received.
And someone please tell that Yuvan Shankar Raja to stop singing. Else, I may be forced to release my karaoke album.
The only good thing about the movie was that it was our first visit to the PVR Cinemas. The theater is good. But again, their restrooms are too cramped and their exit routes are quite complicated.
All in all, like I tweeted and have also mentioned in the heading here, if you ask me how the movie was, I can only tell you that the first letter in the title of Paiyya sums it up.
