In Tamizh, there is this word called "palli" (periya lla). I would like to know its actual meaning, because I am seeing it being used in various places like:
1. pallikkoodam - school
2. palli arai - bed room
3. palli vaasal - mosque
4. madapalli - temple kitchen
5. tiruchirappalli - long name of Trichy, obviously the palli has some significant meaning here
Someone please explain....

J,
You need to brush up your 'tamil dictionary'
PaLLi - is a place where you sleep. We sing ThirupaLLi Yezhuchi to wake somebody up. We go to paLLi Koodam and somebody makes us sleep. Tiru-chira-palli is Lord Sriman Narayanan is in sleeping pose (SriRangam). (Chira-may be another name of Lord Narayanan).
Boss... Palli definitely has its root in sleeping as in Palli arai.
Tiruchirapalli... is with reference to the nearby Srirangam where the lord is in a reclining pose. Now as to Pallikoodam- the place where students sleep in kootam kootama due to boring lecture, Madapalli because.... they manufacture the superb sleep inducing prasadams and Pallivassal ... refers to dargah....Shrines and not mosque.... where the sage is sleeping for sure.
As a human with Thanjavur blood coursing in my body, I have heard several tales of the origin of Trichinopoly, during bouts of holidays in my Chola hometown. One recount is that it was the place of ultimate rest of a great Jain saint called Chira, who they called Chira muni. Another recount is that after Lord Ganesha, disguised as a cowherd, offered to hold the Sri Ranga Vimana from Vibheeshana, as he had his bath in the Kaveri, planted the idol, which immediately took root and became Srirangam, Vibheeshana got pissed and chased Ganesha with intent to MDK (Murder-Death-Kill) until the Lord had nowhere to run at the top of Uchi Pillayar Koil, where he drew out his trunk and revealed his true form to Vibheeshana. Upon which Vibheeshana had said, "Oops, my bad" and they made peace. So, some Chola blokes told me that that Tiru Uchi and Sri Ranga are the points of origin.
But the fact remains, that the origin of the real name of Trichinopoly is shrouded in mystery, much like the mysterious motives of the Jawaman in making up these preposterous Random Observations.
On serious note,
paLLi in Tamil means 'village'
As superthumby said, Tiruchirapalli is deviation from Tiru Uchi Pillayar.
In Kannada, "Pa" is replaced with "Ha". "Halli " means village..
In telugu, it is still "Palli" - No Pallilu :)
In another version is meaning of PaLLi is "land"
(ref: epi caliagraphy on the temple scripts of southern india)
Another possible version is when saivism and vaishnavism were on the decline and jainism gained upper hand , lot of people migrated and settled near river kaveri bank.(chira- as superthumby said). But our Upper and Ramanujar defeated them in "war of words" and and they committed suicide in Kaveri but name remained same.
But in general Palli is land where you "gathher", "pray", etc.
