I am talking about the literal one. I have been "hiccupping" for the past 45 minutes. I get these hiccup spells once in a while and it usually lasts for quite some time. It then gets tired, takes a break and resumes with full vigour a short while after. This cycle lasts for a day or two and then goes away on vacation.
Everyone has their "always works" remedy like drinking a glass of water, eating sugar etc. All movies also include the option of frightening the "hiccupper" to stop hiccups.
However all these things fail me. Outside of the popular remedies, I have 2 of my own. These strategies do not have a 100% success rate, but they work at least 70% of the time for me.
Method 1: Take a tablet of gelusil or probably antacid. I have a very strong feeling that hiccups are caused due to acidity and gelusil helps for sure. But, it is a failure today.
Method 2: This one's a li'l complicated and so follow me very carefully. Take a glass of water filled to the brim. Hold the glass in front of you, with your arm parallel to your chest. Let the glass be at your chest-neck level and some 6-8 inches away from your body. Now comes the most important step. Bend down and drink the water from the glass such that, you actually suck water from the wall of the glass farthest from you.
In effect, it would look like you are bending and the glass would also get tilted in the same direction. And you have to drink water from the farther end and not the one closer to you (the end from which we normally drink).
This technique was taught to me by one of my Japanese born colleagues during my stint in Los Angeles. She saw me suffering from hiccups and recommended this. So far, this too has been one of my partial success stories. So much so, that I am going to try it now.
