the latest enquiry was at the furniture store

i think one of my earliest blogs was about how everyone who knew my parents were asking abt my marital status. well, i got to experience one first hand.
we decided to buy some new furniture and went to the local furniture store which is becoming quite famous. i am not going to name that store since i dont believe in free publicity. lets just say, that the name of the store belongs to a bird in the genus Melanerpes. and btw, the owners (husband and wife) of the store used to reside near my house and so we know each other. enough to have them refer one of the eligible girls in their family to us for a marriage proposal. which, needless to say, could not progress due to the calculations of the astrologer.
coming back on track, while we were looking around for a good sofa set with the help of the sales staff and the owners came in after some time. and after the mutual "hello"s and "how r u"s, the first thing the lady asked my mother was "enna, edhavadhu nalla edam amanjudha?". if u look up a tamil-english dictionary, the above question would roughly run on the lines of "what, did any good place settle?". but the non-natives of this part of the planet need a proper translation. what the lady actually asked my mother was "were you able to make good progress on a suitable alliance for your sons's marriage?".
it was a furniture store. while the hour of the day and the absence of any "x% discount" hoarding ensured that the store wasnt that crowded, the sales people and the 2 other families in the shop need not have known about the status of my wedding proposals. or rather, the lack of it.

anyways, we ended up buying a sofa that was way over the limit that i had in my mind. not that i usually shop with limits, but this one really overshot my estimate.
